  • The island of Lakshadweep is known as an atoll because it is made up of coral, which are the skeletons of small marine animals called polyps.
  • When living polyps die, other polyps grow on top of their tough skeletons. This is how coral islands are formed.
  • They also help in the prevention of coastal erosion by acting as a barrier to cyclones in Lakshadweep.
  • Those atolls, in which there is no island in the middle, but later by erosion and deposition by ocean waves, it becomes like an island on top of them.
