Following questions have two quantities as Quantity I and Quantity II. You have to determine the relationship between them and give an answer as,
Q. Quantity I: A boat covers D km upstream and (D+40) km downstream in 8 hours and the speed of the boat in still water is 30 km/hr. If the boat covers 245 km downstream in 7 hours, then find the value of D?
Quantity II: A car covers a total distance of 300 km in 4 hours. If the car covers a certain distance at the speed of 80 km/hr and the remaining distance at the speed of 70 km/hr, then find the total distance covered by the car at the speed of 70 km/hr?
  • a)
    Quantity I > Quantity II
  • b)
    Quantity I ≥ Quantity II
  • c)
    Quantity I < Quantity II
  • d)
    Quantity I ≤ Quantity II
  • e)
    Quantity I = Quantity II or Relation cannot be established
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Following questions have two quantities as Quantity I and Quantity II....
From quantity I,
The downstream speed of the boat = 245/7 = 35 km/hr
The speed of the stream = 35 – 30 = 5 km/hr
The upstream speed of the boat = 30 – 5 = 25 km/hr
D/25 + (D+40)/35 = 8
7D + 5*(D+40) = 1400
12D = 1200
D = 100 km
From quantity II,
The total distance covered by the car in 80 km/hr = x km
The total distance covered by the car in 70 km/hr = (300-x) km
x/80 + (300-x)/70 = 4
7x + 8(300-x) = 2240
x = 160
The total distance covered by the car in 70 km/hr = 300 – 160 = 140 km/hr
Quantity I < Quantity II
