Grade compensation for a railway track is given as follows-
For B.G = 0.04% per degree of curve
M.G = 0.03% per degree of curve
N.G = 0.02% per degree of curve
Compensated gradient = Ruling gradient- Grade compensation
Ruling gradient = 1 in 200
Degree of curve = 4°
Grade compensation= (0.04x4)/100
Compensated gradient = (1/200) - (0.16/100) = 0.34%

Calculation:
Grade resistance = Ruling gradient × Train resistance (1 in 200)
Curve resistance = (4° × 0.0175) × Train resistance

Given:
Grade resistance = Curve resistance
1 in 200 = 4° × 0.0175
1 in 200 = 0.07
Ruling gradient = 0.07

Admissible gradient:
Admissible gradient = Ruling gradient + Curve gradient
Admissible gradient = 0.07 + 0.34% (4° curve)
Admissible gradient = 0.34%
Therefore, the admissible gradient for a BG track when the grade resistance coupled with a 4° curve resistance equals the resistance due to a ruling gradient of 1 in 200 is 0.34%.
