Which type of canal alignment avoids the construction of cross drainag...

Ridge canal or watershed canal- canals aligned on natural watershed, ensure gravity irrigation on both the sides of the canal. Since the water is flowing away from the ridge line, no drainage can cross a canal aligned on ridge line. Therefore, it does not need construction of cross-drainage works.
Contour canal-a contour canal irrigates only on one side as the other is higher. As the drainage is at right angle to the ground contour, it crosses natural drains and hence cross drainage works are necessary in contour canal.
Side slope canal-it is aligned at right angle to the contour, along the side slopes. It runs parallel to the natural drainage flow. It does not intercept natural drainage channels and therefore does not require the construction of cross drainage works.
