The normal stress at any plane inclined at angle θ

The shear stress at any plane, inclined at angle θ 

The resultant stress is given by

Resultant stress is maximum when shear stress is maximum ie when θ = 45° 
Put θ = 45 ° in the above 2 equations, and we get
