Thermal stresses - 
  • Ordinary materials expand when heated and contract when cooled, hence, an increase in temperature produces a positive thermal strain.
  • Thus an increase in temperature produces an increase in length and a decrease in temperature results in a decrease in length except in very special cases of materials with zero or negative coefficients of expansion.
  • If however, the free expansion of the material is prevented by some external force, then stress is set up in the material known as thermal stress. The stress is equal in magnitude to that which would be produced in the bar by initially allowing the bar to its free length and then applying sufficient force to return the bar to its original length. 
  • But if there is no restriction to expansion or contraction then there will be no thermal stresses associated with the thermal strains.
  • So, no thermal stresses will develop if the temperature of a cantilever beam is increased as there is no restriction to expansion at one end.
