Given:
The average of five consecutive odd numbers is 61
Formula used:
Average = sum of all observations/number of observations
Calculation:
Let the first number be x
So, five consecutive numbers are x, (x + 2), (x + 4), (x + 6), (x + 8)
According to the question,
x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) + (x + 6) + (x + 8) = 61 × 5 
⇒ 5x + 20 = 305
⇒ 5x = 285
⇒ x = 57
Last odd number is x + 8 = 57 + 8
⇒ 65
Difference between the highest and lowest numbers is = 65 – 57 = 8
Shortcut Trick
Let first odd number be x and other be (x + 2), (x + 4), (x + 6) and (x + 8).
So, difference between the highest and lowest number
x + 8 – x = 8
Difference = 8
