Addition of Fractions:

  • Two positive fractions: When adding two positive fractions, you simply add the numerators and keep the same denominator. For example, 1/4 + 1/3 = (1+1)/(4) = 2/4 = 1/2.
  • One positive one negative: To add a positive and a negative fraction, subtract the absolute values of the fractions and keep the sign of the larger fraction. For example, 1/4 + (-1/3) = (1-1)/(4) = 0/4 = 0.
  • Both negative: Adding two negative fractions follows the same rules as adding positive fractions, but the result will be negative. For example, (-1/4) + (-1/3) = (-1-1)/(4) = -2/4 = -1/2.

Subtraction of Fractions:

  • Two positive fractions: Subtracting two positive fractions is similar to addition, but you subtract the numerators. For example, 1/2 - 1/3 = (1-1)/(2) = 0/2 = 0.
  • One positive one negative: Subtracting a positive fraction from a negative fraction is like adding a positive fraction, but the result will be negative. For example, 1/3 - (-1/4) = (1+1)/(3) = 2/3.
  • Both negative: Subtracting two negative fractions is like adding two positive fractions, but the result will be negative. For example, (-1/2) - (-1/3) = (-1+1)/(2) = 0/2 = 0.

Multiplication of Fractions:

  • Two positive fractions: To multiply two positive fractions, simply multiply the numerators and denominators. For example, 1/2 * 1/3 = (1*1)/(2*3) = 1/6.
  • One positive one negative: Multiplying a positive and a negative fraction will result in a negative fraction. For example, 1/3 * (-1/4) = (1*-1)/(3*4) = -1/12.
  • Both negative: Multiplying two negative fractions will result in a positive fraction. For example, (-1/2) * (-1/3) = (-1*-1)/(2*3) = 1/6.

Division of Fractions:

  • Two positive fractions: To divide two positive fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. For example, 1/2 ÷ 1/3 = 1/2 * 3/1 = 3/2.
