Cranial nerves are the nerves that emerge directly from the brain, in contrast to spinal nerves that emerge from the spinal cord. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves, each responsible for specific functions related to different areas of the head and neck.

1. Olfactory Nerve (Cranial Nerve I)
- Associated Area: Olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity
- Function: Responsible for the sense of smell

2. Optic Nerve (Cranial Nerve II)
- Associated Area: Retina of the eye
- Function: Responsible for vision

3. Oculomotor Nerve (Cranial Nerve III)
- Associated Area: Muscles of the eye (except for the lateral rectus and superior oblique muscles)
- Function: Controls most eye movements and pupil constriction

4. Trochlear Nerve (Cranial Nerve IV)
- Associated Area: Superior oblique muscle of the eye
- Function: Controls downward and inward eye movements

5. Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve V)
- Associated Area: Face, scalp, teeth, and temporomandibular joint
- Function: Responsible for sensation in the face, as well as chewing

6. Abducens Nerve (Cranial Nerve VI)
- Associated Area: Lateral rectus muscle of the eye
- Function: Controls outward eye movements

7. Facial Nerve (Cranial Nerve VII)
- Associated Area: Muscles of facial expression, taste buds on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue
- Function: Controls facial expressions and taste sensation

8. Vestibulocochlear Nerve (Cranial Nerve VIII)
- Associated Area: Inner ear (cochlea and vestibular apparatus)
- Function: Responsible for hearing and balance

9. Glossopharyngeal Nerve (Cranial Nerve IX)
- Associated Area: Pharynx, tonsils, taste buds on the posterior one-third of the tongue
- Function: Controls swallowing and taste sensation

10. Vagus Nerve (Cranial Nerve X)
- Associated Area: Pharynx, larynx, thoracic and abdominal viscera
- Function: Regulates involuntary functions such as heart rate and digestion

11. Accessory Nerve (Cranial Nerve XI)
- Associated Area: Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
- Function: Controls head movement and shoulder shrugging

12. Hypoglossal Nerve (Cranial Nerve XII)
- Associated Area: Muscles of the tongue
- Function: Controls tongue movements for speech and swallowing
