Consider the following regarding eco-regions during the Sangam age :1....
Sangam poems help us understand the social formation of the time. According to the thinai concept, Tamilagam was divided into five landscapes or eco-regions namely Kurinji, Marutam, Mullai, Neytal and Palai. Each region had distinct characteristics—a presiding deity, people and cultural life—according to the environmental conditions, as follows:
  • Statement 1 is incorrect: Kurinji refers to the hilly or mountainous regions in the southern part of India. Historically, the people living in these hilly regions often practised hunting and gathering as a means of subsistence.
  • Statement 2 is incorrect: Mullai refers to a forested or heavily wooded region. In the Mullai region, pastoralism (the practise of herding cattle and other livestock) was combined with shifting cultivation (a form of agriculture where fields are cultivated for a few years and then left fallow for regeneration).
  • Statement 3 is correct: Neythal refers to coastal land. In the Neythal region, the primary livelihood activities were fishing and saltmaking.
    • Palai, in the context of ancient Tamil Sangam literature, refers to parched or arid land that was unsuitable for cultivation. In the Palai region, the challenging environmental conditions and lack of fertile soil made agriculture difficult. As a result, some people in the Palai region resorted to cattle lifting and robbery as alternative means of subsistence.
    • Marutham, in the context of ancient Tamil Sangam literature, refers to a riverine or alluvial tract. In the Marutham region, agriculture was practised using ploughs and irrigation.
