Take z=x+ iy so z- that is its conjugate will be equal to x-iy so x^2 -y^2 +2ixy=x-iy equate real and imaginary parts x^2-y^2=x and 2xy=-y so you will get y=0 x=-1/2, 1 and 0 so total 4 combimations of x and y and hence 4 values of z
