Verified Answer
The temperature of the system decreases in an:a)Adiabatic Compression....
Adiabatic process is the process in which change in pressure and volume and temperature takes place without any heat entering or leaving the system is called adiabatic change. So the total heat of the system, undergoing an adiabatic change always remains constant. In an adiabatic expansion since no heat is supplied from outside, therefore the energy required for the expansion of the gas is taken from the gas itself. This signifies that, the internal energy of an ideal gas undergoing in an adiabatic expansion decreases, and because the internal energy of an ideal gas depends only on the temperature, therefore its temperature must decreases. That is why the temperature of a gas drops in an adiabatic expansion.

Adiabatic Expansion and Decrease in Temperature

Adiabatic Expansion:
Adiabatic expansion is a process in which a system expands without transferring heat or mass to its surroundings. In other words, the system is insulated and does not exchange heat with the environment. During adiabatic expansion, the internal energy of the system decreases as the system performs work on the surroundings.

Decrease in Temperature:
According to the first law of thermodynamics, the change in internal energy of a system is equal to the heat added or removed from the system, plus the work done on or by the system. In an adiabatic expansion, no heat is added or removed from the system, and the internal energy of the system decreases due to the work done on the surroundings. This decrease in internal energy leads to a decrease in temperature of the system.

Therefore, option D, "Adiabatic Expansion," is the correct answer to the question "The temperature of the system decreases in an:"

The temperature of the system decreases in an:a)Adiabatic Compression....
The adiabatic compression of a gas causes a rise in temperature of the gas. Adiabatic expansion against pressure, or a spring, causes a drop in temperature. In contrast, free expansion is an isothermal process for an ideal gas.
