Even though the magnitude of action force and reaction force are equal and their directions are opposite, their effects do not get cancelled?

Explanation of why action and reaction forces do not cancel each other out

  • Equal and opposite forces: According to Newton's third law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This means that for every force exerted, there is an equal and opposite force exerted in the opposite direction.

  • Force on different objects: It is important to note that the action force and reaction force act on different objects. For example, if you push a book across a table, the action force is the force exerted by your hand on the book, while the reaction force is the force exerted by the book on your hand.

  • Effects on different objects: The effects of the action and reaction forces are also different. While the action force causes a change in the motion of the object it is acting upon, the reaction force causes a change in the motion of the object exerting the force. In the example of pushing a book across a table, the action force causes the book to move, while the reaction force causes your hand to move in the opposite direction.

  • Net force: The reason why the action and reaction forces do not cancel each other out is because they act on different objects and have different effects. The net force on an object is the sum of all the forces acting on it. In the example of pushing a book across a table, the net force on the book is the force exerted by your hand minus the force of friction. The net force on your hand is the force of friction minus the force exerted by the book. Therefore, the action and reaction forces do not cancel each other out.

Real-life examples of action and reaction forces

  • Swimming: When a swimmer pushes against the water with their arms and legs, the action force is the force exerted by the swimmer on the water, while the reaction force is the force exerted by the water on the swimmer, propelling them forward.

  • Balloons: When air is blown into a balloon, the action force is the force exerted by the air on the balloon, while the reaction force is the force exerted by the balloon on the air, pushing it out of the balloon.

  • Jumping: When a person jumps, the action force is the force exerted by their legs on the ground, while the reaction force is the force exerted by the ground on the person, propelling them upward.

?Even though the magnitude of action force and reaction force are equa...
According to Newton's Third " Every action has equal and opposite reaction " Action = - Reaction But these forces even though they are equal and opposite they don't cancel each other because they don't act on the same object. "Action and Reaction forces act on two different objects" For example: Consider an object placed on the ground. We have action force  [weight = mg ] is exerted by the block on the ground. and reaction force is normal force exerted by the ground on block.. Hence as they act on different objects. They do not cancel.
