A spaceship is moving in space with a velocity of 60 kilometers per second .It fires its retro engines for 20 seconds and velocity is reduced to 55 kilometers per second. calculate the distance travelled by the spaceship in 40 second. from the time of firing of the retro Rockets?
Verified Answer
A spaceship is moving in space with a velocity of 60 kilometers per se...
U = 60 km/sec
v = 55 km/sec
t = 20 sec
let us assume that a uniform deceleration is resulted by firing the retro engines.
   a = (v - u)/ t = - 5/20 = - 0.25 km/s^2
distance travelled in the first 20 sec. = s = u t + 1/2 a t^2
   s = 60 * 20 - 1/2 * 0.25 * 20^2 = 1, 150 km.

After 20 sec. the velocity of the spaceship is constant at 55 km/sec.  Hence, the distance travelled is = 55 * 20 = 1, 100 km

The total distance travelled in 40 sec. = 2, 250 km

Distance Travelled by the Spaceship
- Initial velocity of the spaceship = 60 km/s
- Final velocity after firing retro engines = 55 km/s
- Time for which retro engines were fired = 20 seconds

Calculating the acceleration:
Acceleration can be calculated using the formula:
Acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) / time
Acceleration = (55 - 60) / 20
Acceleration = -0.25 km/s²

Calculating the distance travelled:
Using the formula for distance travelled with constant acceleration:
Distance = initial velocity * time + 0.5 * acceleration * time²
Distance = 60 * 40 + 0.5 * (-0.25) * 40²
Distance = 2400 - 400
Distance = 2000 kilometers
Therefore, the spaceship travels a distance of 2000 kilometers in 40 seconds from the time of firing the retro rockets.
