Soil Sample State of Saturation

Introduction
The state of saturation of a soil sample is determined by the ratio of the volume of water in the soil to the total volume of the soil. Depending on this ratio, the soil sample can be in one of the following states of saturation: partial saturation, full saturation, oversaturation, or undersaturation.

Given Data
Void ratio = 1.3
Water content = 50%
Specific gravity = 2.60

Determination of State of Saturation
To determine the state of saturation of the soil sample, the following steps are taken:

Step 1: Calculation of Porosity
Porosity is the ratio of the volume of voids in the soil to the total volume of the soil. It is given by the formula:

Porosity = Void ratio / (1 + Void ratio) = 1.3 / (1 + 1.3) = 0.565

Step 2: Calculation of Degree of Saturation
Degree of saturation is the ratio of the volume of water in the soil to the volume of voids in the soil. It is given by the formula:

Degree of saturation = (Volume of water / Volume of voids) x 100%
= (Water content / (1 - Porosity)) x 100%
= (50% / (1 - 0.565)) x 100%
= 115.79%

Step 3: Determination of State of Saturation
Based on the degree of saturation, the state of saturation of the soil sample can be determined as follows:

- Partial Saturation: Degree of saturation < />
- Full Saturation: Degree of saturation = 100%
- Oversaturation: Degree of saturation > 100%
- Undersaturation: Degree of saturation < />

Since the degree of saturation of the given soil sample is 115.79%, which is greater than 100%, the soil sample is in a state of full saturation.

Conclusion
The soil sample with a void ratio of 1.3, water content of 50%, and specific gravity of 2.60 is in a state of full saturation.
