Mechanism of Monsoons

Monsoons are caused by the difference in heating and cooling of land and sea.

The sun heats up the land faster than it heats up the sea, resulting in the formation of a low-pressure area over the land.

This low-pressure area attracts cool and moist air from the sea, which results in the onset of the monsoon.

During the summer season, the landmass of India gets heated up, and the temperature rises. This results in a low-pressure system over the land and a high-pressure system over the sea.

The winds move from high pressure to low pressure areas, and hence the winds from the Indian Ocean move towards the low-pressure area over India. These winds carry moisture with them, which results in heavy rainfall.

The monsoon winds change their direction in the winter season and move from the land to the sea. This results in the dry and cold winter season.

Southwest summer monsoon wind is attracted to India by a low pressure area that's caused by the extreme heat of the Thar Desert and adjoining areas, during summer. Moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean come to fill up the void, but because they can't pass through the Himalaya region, they're forced to rise. The gain in altitude of the clouds results in a drop in temperature, bringing about rain.

When the southwest monsoon wind reaches India, it splits into two parts around the mountainous region of the Western Ghats in south-central India. One part moves northwards over the Arabian Sea and up the coastal side of the Western Ghats. The other flows over the Bay of Bengal, up through Assam, and hits the Eastern Himalaya range.
