The strength of intermolecular forces of attraction decreases in the order:Solids > liquids > gases.So liquids and gases have weaker intermolecular forces of attraction than solids. Also, their molecules are farther apart from each other than in solids.If you increase the pressure on a gas, its molecules are brought in close contact with each other. The attractive forces eventually become strong enough to hold the molecules close together, and the gas condenses to the liquid state.If you increase the pressure still further, the molecules come so close to each other that the attractive forces are strong enough to hold them in place in a three-dimensional arrangement. The substance then becomes a solid.
