Calico Acts
The Calico Acts (1690–1721) banned the import of textiles into England, followed by the restriction of sale of most cotton textiles. The English East India Company quickly embraced the demand for calico, importing exotic textiles from around the globe into England and creating competition for domestic woollen textiles. The calico question was one of the major issues of National politics between the 1690s and the 1730s. Parliament began to see a decline in domestic textile sales, and an increase in imported textiles from places like China and India. Seeing the East India Company and their textile importation as a threat to domestic textile businesses, Parliament passed the Calico Acts as an attack on textile importation. Dissatisfied with the smuggling of outside textiles after the original Calico Acts; in 1721, Parliament passed a stricter addition to the original Calico Acts, this time, prohibiting the sale of most cottons, imported and domestic (exempting only thread and raw cotton), and promoting the sale of wool. In that decade, the UK was importing 1.5 million pounds of cotton; in another 70 years (1790s), the UK was importing 30 million pounds of cotton a year from India.

The Calico Act and its enactment by the government

The Calico Act was enacted by the British government in 1700 to protect the domestic textile industry from the growing competition of Indian textiles, particularly calico fabrics. The Act was aimed at restricting the import of Indian cotton textiles into England and its colonies, including the American colonies.

Background:
- The British government saw Indian textiles as a threat to the English textile industry, which was suffering due to stiff competition from Indian fabrics.
- Indian textiles, especially calico fabrics, were highly sought after in Europe and were known for their quality and intricate designs.
- The popularity of Indian textiles led to a decline in demand for English textiles, causing significant economic losses for the English textile industry.

Reasons for enactment:
1. Protection of English textile industry:
- The government enacted the Calico Act to protect the English textile industry from Indian competition.
- The act aimed to restrict the import of Indian textiles and promote the consumption of English textiles.

2. Economic considerations:
- The declining demand for English textiles affected employment and profits in the industry.
- The government wanted to safeguard the economic interests of English textile manufacturers, ensuring their survival and growth.

3. Colonial control:
- The British government also sought to control their colonies economically.
- By restricting the import of Indian textiles into the colonies, they aimed to maintain a monopoly on the textile trade and ensure that the colonies remained dependent on British-manufactured goods.

Impact:
1. Indian textile industry:
- The Calico Act severely affected the Indian textile industry, which heavily relied on exports to England and its colonies.
- The Act led to a decline in demand for Indian textiles, causing economic hardships for Indian weavers and artisans.

2. Indian economy:
- The enactment of the Calico Act had a negative impact on the Indian economy as it disrupted the textile trade and led to a decrease in revenue from exports.

3. Resistance and smuggling:
- The Calico Act faced resistance from Indian weavers, traders, and consumers.
- Smuggling of Indian textiles into England and its colonies became rampant, as people sought to evade the restrictions imposed by the Act.

In conclusion, the Calico Act was enacted by the British government to protect the English textile industry from Indian competition. By restricting the import of Indian textiles, the government aimed to safeguard the interests of English manufacturers, maintain colonial control, and ensure economic stability. However, the Act had a detrimental impact on the Indian textile industry and the Indian economy as a whole.
