But if you want to know the calculation behind it, here it is.

Let us suppose son’s age to be X and father age to be Y.

10 years ago, son’s age (X-10) and father’s age (Y-10)

According to the question, Ten years ago the age of the father was four times the age of his son

Hence, 4(X-10)=Y-10

=>4X-40=Y-10

=>Y=4X-30 or 4X-Y=30  eq(i)

10 years hence, son’s age (X+10) and father’s age (Y+10)

According to the question, Ten years hence the age of the father will be twice that of his son

Hence, 2(X+10)=Y+10

=> 2X+20=Y+10

=>Y=2X+10 eq(ii)

Both eq(i) and eq(ii) gives father’s present age , now we can just avaluate them

i.e 4X-30=2X+10

=>4X-2X=10+30

=>2X=40

=>X=20 i.e son’s present age is 20 years

to get father’s age we can put X value either in eq(i) or eq(ii)

Y=2(20)+10 = 50 Years
