how tribes work at grassroot democracy?

how tribes work at grassroot democracy? Related: Chapter Notes - The ...
Many tribal areas have had a rich tradition of grassroot democratic functioning. In this regard an example can be given from Meghalaya. Here, all the three major ethnic tribal groups, namely, the Khasis, Jaintias and the Garos have their own traditional political institutions that have existed for hundreds of years.
All these political institutions were fairly well-developed and functioned at various tiers, such as the village level, clan level and state level.
In the traditional political system of the Khasis each clan had its own council known as the ‘Durbar Kur’ which was presided over by the clan headman.
Though there is a long tradition of grassroot political institutions in Meghalaya, a large chunk of tribal areas lie outside the provisions of the 73rd Amendment. This may be because the concerned policy makers did not wish to interfere with the traditional tribal institutions.

Understanding Grassroots Democracy in Tribal Contexts
Grassroots democracy refers to the participation of local communities in decision-making processes that affect their lives. In India, tribes play a significant role in this democratic framework, particularly through the Panchayati Raj system.
Key Features of Tribal Grassroots Democracy:
  • Decentralization of Power: Tribal self-governance promotes local leadership and decision-making, allowing communities to address their unique challenges.
  • Participation and Representation: Tribes have specific provisions that ensure representation in local bodies, empowering indigenous voices in governance.
  • Cultural Relevance: Tribal governance systems are often rooted in traditional practices, ensuring that decisions reflect local customs and values.
  • Women’s Empowerment: Many tribal areas encourage women's participation in local governance, challenging traditional gender norms and fostering equality.
  • Conflict Resolution: Tribal councils often serve as platforms for resolving disputes, maintaining harmony and social order within the community.

Challenges to Grassroots Democracy in Tribal Areas:
  • External Influence: Political parties and external agents can disrupt local governance, undermining the autonomy of tribal institutions.
  • Resource Constraints: Limited access to resources can hinder effective governance and the implementation of community decisions.
  • Awareness and Education: Lack of awareness about rights and democratic processes can limit active participation among tribal members.

Conclusion:
Tribal communities exemplify grassroots democracy through their unique governance structures, emphasizing local participation and cultural relevance. While challenges exist, strengthening these systems can enhance self-governance and empower tribal populations in India.
