Isomerism in [Co(NH3)3 (NO2/3)] and [Co(NH3)3 NO2]Cl2

Geometrical and linkage isomerism is possible in the w(III) complexes [Co(NH3)3 (NO2/3)] and [Co(NH3)3 NO2]Cl2 respectively.

Geometrical isomerism:
Geometrical isomerism occurs when there is a difference in the spatial arrangement of ligands around the metal ion. In [Co(NH3)3 (NO2/3)], the NO2 ligand can exist in two forms, namely, cis and trans, due to the presence of a double bond in the NO2 ligand. Thus, the complex can exist as cis-[Co(NH3)3(NO2)Cl] and trans-[Co(NH3)3(NO2)Cl]. These are geometrical isomers.

Linkage isomerism:
Linkage isomerism occurs when the ligand attaches to the metal ion through a different atom. In [Co(NH3)3 NO2]Cl2, the NO2 ligand can bind to the metal ion through either the nitrogen or the oxygen atom. Thus, the complex can exist as [Co(NH3)3 NO2-N]Cl2 and [Co(NH3)3 NO2-O]Cl2. These are linkage isomers.

Therefore, the possible isomerism in the w(III) complexes [Co(NH3)3 (NO2/3)] and [Co(NH3)3 NO2]Cl2 respectively, are geometrical and linkage isomerism.
