Counter Flow Heat Exchanger and NTU

A counter flow heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger in which two fluids flow in opposite directions. The heat transfer occurs through a wall or a set of tubes, with one fluid flowing inside the tubes and the other fluid flowing outside the tubes. The fluids exchange heat as they flow in opposite directions, and the temperature difference between the two fluids gradually decreases.

NTU (Number of Transfer Units) is a dimensionless parameter that represents the ratio of the heat transfer area to the product of the mass flow rates of the two fluids. NTU is a measure of the effectiveness of a heat exchanger, and it determines the amount of heat transferred between the two fluids.

Effectiveness of the Heat Exchanger

The effectiveness of the counter flow heat exchanger can be calculated using the following expression:

ε = (1 - e^(-NTU(1+Cr)))/(1 + Cr)

where ε is the effectiveness of the heat exchanger, NTU is the number of transfer units, and Cr is the capacity ratio, which is the ratio of the heat capacities of the two fluids.

Given that NTU is equal to 0.5, and the product of specific heat and mass flow rate is the same for the hot and cold fluids, we can assume that Cr is equal to 1. Therefore, the expression for the effectiveness simplifies to:

ε = (1 - e^(-NTU(2)))/(1 + 1)

ε = (1 - e^(-1))/(2)

ε = 0.33

Therefore, the effectiveness of the counter flow heat exchanger is 0.33. This means that 33% of the heat energy is transferred between the two fluids, and 67% of the energy is lost to the surroundings.
