Statement II : Restricted rotation is responsible for cis and trans-isomers of 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane.
  • a)
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I
  • b)
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct and Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I
  • c)
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  • d)
Statement II is correct but Statement I is incorrect
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Q.Statement I : 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane has two stereoisomers.Stateme...
In order to show stereoisomers, a compound should not contain plain of symmetry, centre of symmetry,or any
In cis- form of this compound plain of symmetry will be present making the molecule incapable to show sterioisomerism
So statement 2 is correct, while statement 1  is incorrect.

Q.Statement I : 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane has two stereoisomers.Stateme...
Explanation:
Statement I is correct because 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane has two different groups attached to the same carbon atom, resulting in two possible stereoisomers.

Statement II is also correct because the cyclopropane ring is highly strained and does not allow free rotation around its carbon-carbon bonds. This restricted rotation leads to the formation of two different stereoisomers, cis and trans, of 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane.

However, Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I because restricted rotation is not the only factor responsible for the formation of stereoisomers. Other factors such as chirality, double bond geometry, and asymmetric carbon centers can also lead to stereoisomerism.

Therefore, the correct answer is option D, Statement II is correct but Statement I is incorrect.

Q.Statement I : 1,2-dichlorocyclopropane has two stereoisomers.Stateme...
Option d is the answer bcoz consider we are attacking 2 plane surface by 2 pins and placing one of the surface in our hands and try to rotate the other we find that it can't rotate this shows us that doubly bonded carbon with other atoms have restricted rotation for this reason give rise to geometrical isomers which is basically a typical sterioisemer. and they are having 2 chlorine atoms attached to either carbons and exhibit sterioisemerism
