Simplifying Expression using BODMAS


BODMAS is an acronym used to remember the order of operations when solving mathematical expressions. It stands for Brackets, Orders (exponents), Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction.


Steps for Simplifying Expression using BODMAS



  1. Simplify any expressions inside the brackets first.

  2. Solve any exponents or powers.

  3. Perform any multiplication or division, working from left to right.

  4. Perform any addition or subtraction, working from left to right.



Example


Let's simplify the expression: 6 + 3 × 2² - 8 ÷ 4



  1. Simplify any expressions inside the brackets first. There are no brackets in this expression.

  2. Solve any exponents or powers. We have 2² which is 4.

  3. Perform any multiplication or division, working from left to right. We have 3 × 4 which is 12 and 8 ÷ 4 which is 2. So, our expression becomes 6 + 12 - 2.

  4. Perform any addition or subtraction, working from left to right. We have 6 + 12 which is 18 and then we subtract 2. So, the simplified expression is 16.



Integers


Integers are a set of whole numbers and their opposites. These numbers do not have any fractional or decimal parts. Integers can be positive, negative, or zero.


Examples of Integers



  • -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5



Operations with Integers



  • Addition: When adding two integers with the same sign, we add their absolute values and keep the same sign. When adding two integers with different signs, we subtract their absolute values and keep the sign of the larger number.

  • Subtraction: When subtracting two integers, we add the opposite of the second integer to the first integer.

  • Multiplication: When multiplying two integers with the same sign, the product is positive. When multiplying two integers with different signs, the product is negative.

  • Division: When dividing two integers, the quotient can be positive, negative, or zero depending on the signs of the dividend and divisor.



Example


Let's perform some operations with integers:



  1. (-5) + (-3) = -8

  2. (-5) - (-3) = -2

  3. (-5) × (-3) = 15

  4. (-5) ÷ (-3) = 1 with remainder -2
