Reaction of 2-Methylbutane with Bromine in Sunlight

Reaction overview:
2-Methylbutane + Br2 (in sunlight) → 2-bromo-2-methylbutane + HBr

Explanation:
When 2-methylbutane is reacted with bromine in the presence of sunlight, a substitution reaction takes place wherein a hydrogen atom from 2-methylbutane is replaced by a bromine atom. The reaction is a free-radical substitution reaction, which proceeds through a series of chain reactions.

The reaction begins with the homolytic cleavage of the bromine molecule into two bromine radicals due to the energy provided by sunlight. The bromine radicals then attack the 2-methylbutane molecule, abstracting a hydrogen atom from it to form a 2-methylbutyl radical and hydrogen bromide.

The 2-methylbutyl radical further reacts with another bromine molecule to form the 2-bromo-2-methylbutane product and a bromine radical. The bromine radical then attacks another 2-methylbutane molecule to continue the chain reaction.

Out of the possible isomers of 2-bromo-2-methylbutane, the major product is formed due to the more stable tertiary carbon being substituted by the bromine atom. Hence, the correct option is C, i.e., 2-bromo-2-methylbutane.

Conclusion:
Thus, the reaction of 2-methylbutane with bromine in the presence of sunlight follows a free-radical substitution mechanism to give 2-bromo-2-methylbutane as the major product.
