CLAT 2022 UG Syllabus


Introduction and Overview

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) Undergraduate (UG) 2022 will focus on testing the comprehension and reasoning skills of candidates. There will be an overall focus on evaluating skill sets and aptitude for a legal education rather than existing knowledge.
Broadly speaking, the CLAT UG 2022 will cover the following subjects for total of 150 Questions with 1 Mark each: 

  • English Language
  • Current Affairs, including  General Knowledge
  • Legal Reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative Techniques

English Language (Approx 20% weightage)


In this section, passages of about 450 words each will be given. Extracted from contemporary or historically significant non-fiction and fiction writing, these passages would typically be of a standard that a 12th standard student may be able to read within 5-7 minutes.
Each passage will be followed by a list of questions that will require you to demonstrate your skills of comprehension and language and your abilities to:

  • Read and comprehend the key arguments and viewpoints discussed in the passage.
  • Draw a logical conclusion or inference from the passage.
  • Make a comparison of and contrast the differing viewpoints and arguments laid out in the passage.
  • Summarize the passage.
  • Understand and make sense of the words and phrases used in the passage.

Current Affairs including General Knowledge (Approx 25% weightage)

In this section, passages of upto 450 words each will be provided. The passages will be taken from non-fiction writing such as news and other journalistic sources. There may be questions related to legal knowledge or information, but not pertaining to knowledge of the law beyond the passage. Each passage will be followed by a set of questions that will require you to exhibit your awareness of various areas of current affairs and general knowledge including:

  • Arts and culture
  • Contemporary events of significance from India and across the world
  • International affairs
  • Historical events of continuing significance

The standard of questions will be equal to 12th standard questions

Legal Reasoning (Approx 25% weightage)

In this section, there will be passages of approximately 450 words each. The passages may pertain to fact-based situations involving public policy questions, legal matters, or moral philosophical questions. You must have a general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues to better apply these general principles to the given fact scenarios.

Each passage will be followed by a list of questions that will require you to:

  • General awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues.
  • Correctly identify and infer the rules and principles laid out in the passage.
  • Apply these rules and principles to various fact situations.
  • Understand that changes made to the rules or principles might alter the way they are applied to various fact situations.

The standard of questions will be equal to 12th standard questions.

Logical Reasoning (Approx 20% weightage)

This section of the UG-CLAT 2022 will include several short passages of roughly 300 words each. Each passage will be followed by one or more questions that will require you to:

  • Identify an argument, its premises and draw conclusions.
  • Identify contradictions and equivalence, and assess the effectiveness of arguments.
  • Conduct a critical analysis of the patterns of reasoning, and assess how conclusions may rely on particular premises or evidence.
  • Make an inference of what follows from the passage and subsequently apply such inferences to new situations.
  • Draw analogies and relationships, recognize contradictions and equivalence, and evaluate the effectiveness of arguments.

The standard of questions will be equal to 12th standard questions.

Quantitative Techniques (Approx 10% weightage)

The Quantitative Techniques section will include brief sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial representations containing numerical information. These will be followed by a series of questions that will call for you to:

  • Derive, infer, and manipulate numerical information laid out in such passages, graphs, or other diagrammatic representations.
  • Apply 10th standard mathematical operations on the given information, including from such areas as ratios and proportions, basic algebra, statistical estimation, and mensuration.
