In S phase, DNA replication occurs. G2 phase is a preparation phase before cell division. Finally, during M phase, the cell divides into two daughter cells through mitosis or meiosis.

During prophase, chromosomes condense, and the nuclear envelope breaks down. In metaphase, chromosomes align in the middle of the cell. Anaphase involves the separation of sister chromatids, and in telophase, two new nuclei form around the separated chromosomes.
