What are International Environmental Conventions?

What is United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change?

India stands among a small group of nations that have hosted the Conference of the Parties (COP) for all three Rio conventions related to climate change (UNFCCC), biodiversity (CBD), and land (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification).
  • The UNFCCC became effective in 1994 and has been ratified by 197 countries. It serves as the foundational treaty for both the 2015 Paris Agreement and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. It is headquartered in Bonn, Germany.

What is United Nations Conference on Environment & Development?

  • The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), widely recognized as the 'Earth Summit,' took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spanning from June 3 to June 14 in 1992. This global conference marked the 20th anniversary of the initial Human Environment Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972.
  • The Earth Summit underscored the intricate interdependence of various social, economic, and environmental factors, highlighting that progress in one sector necessitates actions in other sectors for long-term sustainability. The primary goal of the Rio Earth Summit was to establish a comprehensive agenda and a fresh framework for international collaboration on environmental and development matters.   • The summit affirmed that the idea of sustainable development was an achievable objective for all people worldwide, irrespective of whether they operated at the local, national, regional, or international levels.

  • These governments made resolute commitments to realize the development objectives outlined in the Millennium Declaration by the year 2015. To combat poverty, they pledged an extra $50 billion annually and expressed their determination to identify inventive sources of development funding. Furthermore, they vowed to take supplementary steps to ensure the sustainability of long-term debt.
