What's new in GATE 2022?

In a meeting of the National Coordination Board (NCB)- GATE on May 22, 2021, for the official handover of duty from IIT Bombay to IIT Kharagpur, the conducting body has proposed certain new elements to GATE 2022.

  • Two new papers added to the list of GATE 2022 papers. NCB-GATE has approved the addition of- Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and Geomatics Engineering as the two new papers.
  • Also with more students appearing for GATE exam from their hometown due to COVID-19, NCB-GATE has proposed setting more number of GATE Exam Centers in 2022.
  • NCB-GATE has also decided to allow candidates to download their GATE Scorecard for three years, or the time till the time the scorecard is valid. After that no information on the same will be provided. Currently, GATE Scorecards can be download till December 31 of the conducting year with a payment of Rs. 500.
  • NCB-GATE has also stated that all the benefits given to candidates in GATE 2021 will be continued in 2022 as well.
  • The exam tests the comprehensive understanding of candidate in various undergraduate subjects including Engineering/Technology/Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science.
  • The exam, which is conducted online, encompasses 27 papers. The exam papers had questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. However, the rest of the questions are of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.
  • And the main reason for appearing in GATE is because it is the GATEway to so many technical fields.
  • GATE Scorecard validates that candidate appeared and qualified GATE.

Changes Introduced in GATE 2021

There were a number of changes that had been introduced in GATE 2021. Major introductions include:

  • Two new subjects- had been introduced in GATE 2021- Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Science (XS).
  • Eligibility for GATE 2021 had been relaxed allowing candidates in the third/ final year of their graduation to apply for the exam.
  • GATE exam pattern had also been revised and the new pattern allowed a candidate to sit for a maximum of two papers. An updated list of combinations of papers had been released from which candidates could select two papers.
  • GATE Syllabus for all 25 papers had been revised.
  • GATE 2021 exam dates were spread over a longer period of time considering the COVID-19 situation.
  • 11 new GATE Exam Centers had been added in cities such as Shirdi, Latur, Akola, Dhule, etc.

GATE 2022: What to Expect?

  • IIT Kharagpur last conducted GATE exam in the year 2014, 2006, 2000, 1994 and 1988. Based on the exam analysis for the years, the overall difficulty levels of the exam were concluded to be moderate. However, since all the participating IITs and IISc are collectively responsible for preparing the question papers, students must make sure to prepare well for the exam. Check GATE Preparation Tips
  • It was also seen that the questions in the exam were majorly numerical type. Therefore students can expect more numerical-type questions. Candidates who appeared for the exam in 2014 also reported that an analytical approach was required to solve the question paper with an in-depth knowledge of concepts.
  • With more number of numerical type questions, students reported that the exam was time-consuming. It is therefore recommended that students preparing for GATE 2022 must work on their calculations and speed.
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) in GATE 2021 papers were zero or very less in number. However, according to experts, the number of MSQs in GATE 2022 is expected to gradually increase similar to the pattern when NATs were initially introduced.

The benefits of GATE Scorecard are enlisted below
