Menelaos, Polyphemos and Proteus - Characters, The Odyssey | The Odyssey by Homer- Summary, Themes & Characters - Novels PDF Download

Menelaos

A King of Sparta and husband to Helen; he's the second man Telemachos visits in his search for Odysseus, and he's the one who confirms the boy's father is still alive and on Kalypso's island. Like his buddy Nestor, he's hospitable—but his main function is to tell Telemachos lots and lots of stories about his dad.

Polyphemos

Sometimes spelled Polyphemus. The specific one-eyed monster that the Ithakans encounter on their way home. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Polyphemos eats human flesh. Doubly unfortunately, Polyphemos is Poseidon's son. Once the Greeks blind him and make their escape, Polyphemos calls in a favor from daddy. This means years and years of torture for Odysseus (and his men, until they die). Basically, Polyphemos is the explanation for Poseidon's outrage at Odysseus.

Proteus

An island god we hear about in Menelaos' tale to Telemachos; he reveals to the King how to escape the island he's stuck on (namely, by traveling to Egypt and sacrificing to Zeus)
