Q7. A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which end is its north pole located?
Ans:  To find the north pole of a bar magnet without markings, you can follow these steps:

  • Suspending the magnet freely allows it to rotate.
  • Once at rest, the magnet will align itself in the north-south direction.
  • The end pointing towards the north is the north pole.
  • The opposite end, pointing towards the south, is the south pole.


Q8. You are given an iron strip. How will you make it into a magnet?
Ans:  An iron strip can be turned into a magnet by following these steps:

  • Place the iron strip on a flat surface.
  • Take a bar magnet and hold one of its poles near one end of the iron strip.
  • Without lifting the magnet, move it along the length of the iron strip to the other end.
  • Lift the magnet and return it to the starting point.
  • Repeat the movement in the same direction.

Continue this process for at least 30-40 times. After this, the iron strip will become a bar magnet with two poles. To check if it has magnetised, bring a pin or some iron filings close to the strip. If it does not attract them, repeat the process until it does.

Ans: A compass consists of a magnetic needle that can move freely.

  • The needle aligns itself in the north-south direction when the compass is still.
