Bird Talk
‘Think...’ said the robin,
‘Think...’ said the jay,
sitting in the garden
talking one day.
‘Think about people
the way they grow:
they don’t have feathers
at all, you know.
They don’t eat beetles,
they don’t grow wings,
they don’t like sitting
on wires and things.’
‘Think!’ said the robin.
‘Think!’ said the jay.
‘Aren’t people funny
to be that way?’

FAQs on NCERT Textbook - Bird Talk - English for Class 3

1. What is the importance of bird communication?
Ans. Bird communication is important for various reasons. It helps birds establish and maintain territories, attract mates, and warn each other of potential dangers. Different bird species use a variety of vocalizations, such as songs, calls, and alarms, to communicate with each other effectively.
2. How do birds produce different sounds?
Ans. Birds produce sounds using their vocal organs, which include the syrinx. The syrinx is located at the base of their trachea and is responsible for the production of various vocalizations. By adjusting the tension and shape of the syrinx muscles, birds can create different sounds and pitches.
3. Can birds understand human language?
Ans. Birds have the ability to learn and understand human language to some extent. Certain species, like parrots and mynahs, are known for their ability to mimic and even comprehend human speech. However, their understanding is limited, and they primarily rely on vocalizations specific to their own species for communication.
4. How do birds use body language to communicate?
Ans. Birds also use body language to communicate with each other. For example, they may display certain postures, movements, or gestures to convey messages. These visual cues can indicate aggression, submission, courtship, or territorial boundaries, allowing birds to communicate without vocalizations.
5. Can birds communicate with other animal species?
Ans. Birds have been observed communicating with other animal species in certain situations. For instance, some bird species have symbiotic relationships with other animals, such as cleaner birds and their clients. They use specific movements and signals to communicate and establish a mutually beneficial interaction. However, such inter-species communication is relatively rare and specific to certain bird species.
