FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Modals Expressing Attitudes - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English Class 10

1. What are modals expressing attitudes in English grammar?
Ans. Modals expressing attitudes are a category of modal verbs that are used to convey the speaker's attitudes, opinions, or judgments about a situation or action. Examples of modals expressing attitudes include 'can', 'could', 'may', 'might', 'must', 'should', 'would', and 'ought to'.
2. How are modals expressing attitudes used in sentences?
Ans. Modals expressing attitudes are used in sentences to indicate the speaker's perspective or attitude towards a particular action or situation. For example, "You should study for the exam" implies that the speaker believes studying is necessary for success. Similarly, "He might be late" suggests that the speaker thinks there is a possibility of the person being late.
3. What is the difference between 'must' and 'should' as modals expressing attitudes?
Ans. 'Must' and 'should' are both modals expressing attitudes, but they convey different levels of necessity or obligation. 'Must' is used to indicate a strong obligation or necessity, whereas 'should' suggests a weaker obligation or recommendation. For example, "You must submit the assignment by tomorrow" implies a strict requirement, while "You should complete the assignment as soon as possible" suggests a suggestion or advice.
4. Can modals expressing attitudes be used to express uncertainty?
Ans. Yes, some modals expressing attitudes can be used to express uncertainty. For example, 'may', 'might', and 'could' are often used to indicate possibility or uncertainty in a situation. For instance, "It may rain tomorrow" suggests the possibility of rain but does not provide a definite answer.
5. Are modals expressing attitudes used in formal or informal language?
Ans. Modals expressing attitudes can be used in both formal and informal language, depending on the context. While some modals like 'should' and 'ought to' are commonly used in formal situations, others like 'can' and 'could' are more commonly used in informal conversations. It is important to consider the appropriate level of formality when using these modals in different contexts.
