SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT
41
In this unit you will learn about the relationship between a subject and its verb. We
need to work on this, because students often make mistakes in identifying whether
the subject noun is singular or plural. As a result, mistakes are made in the use of
verbs to go with words like jeans, scissors, politics etc. This unit deals with these
areas.
A. Subject - Singular, Plural or Uncountable
A.1. Read the following dialogue. First, underline the word or words that
represent the subject in each sentence of the dialogue. Then circle the
verbs that each subject refers to. (One has been done for you as an
example)

Is it true that the students from the Space
Research Centre this evening?

are arriving

I agree. The constellation they are going to
observe is clearly visible from here.

What about the team supervisor? Is he
coming?

No, their manager called this morning. The
supervisor is busy making arrangements for the
committee which is to arrive tomorrow.

I have heard that he is going to join politics.

Yes, this news is true.

But honesty is his policy and politics is a
corrupt game these days.

Yes, the study they are conducting needs an
elevated location like our campus.

Yes, but that does not mean that good people
should not join politics.
Yes, you are right.
When the pick-up bus that we have sent to the
railway station arrives here, we may need help
to shift the luggage which, I presume, is going
to be very heavy.

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Subject-Verb Agreement - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English Class 10

1. What is subject-verb agreement in English grammar?
Ans. Subject-verb agreement is a grammatical rule that states that the subject and verb in a sentence must agree in number. In other words, if the subject is singular, the verb should also be singular, and if the subject is plural, the verb should be plural as well.
2. What are some common examples of subject-verb agreement errors?
Ans. Some common examples of subject-verb agreement errors include using a singular verb with a plural subject or vice versa. For example, saying "The cats plays in the garden" instead of "The cats play in the garden" or "She run fast" instead of "She runs fast."
3. How can I identify the subject and verb in a sentence to ensure subject-verb agreement?
Ans. To identify the subject and verb in a sentence, you need to ask yourself "Who or what is doing the action?" The answer to this question is the subject, and the verb is the action word that describes what the subject is doing.
4. What are some strategies to ensure subject-verb agreement in writing?
Ans. Some strategies to ensure subject-verb agreement in writing are: - Pay attention to the number of the subject (singular or plural) and choose the appropriate verb accordingly. - Watch out for words that come between the subject and verb and make sure they do not affect the agreement. - Be careful with indefinite pronouns like "everyone" or "someone" as they are usually singular and require a singular verb.
5. Can you provide some exercises or practice questions to improve subject-verb agreement skills?
Ans. Sure! Here are a few practice questions: 1. The dog (barks / bark) loudly. 2. My friends (is / are) coming over for dinner tonight. 3. The book on the shelf (is / are) mine. 4. The students (study / studies) hard for their exams. 5. Neither of the options (seems / seem) suitable for me. Remember to choose the verb form that agrees with the subject in each sentence.
