0:2:8: and council elections were boycotted in

0:5:21: that Congress leadership did not approve

0:5:24: houses of landlords and Merchants were
0:5:27: attacked grain hordes were taken over
0:5:29: and rumors of land redistribution were
0:5:32: spread
0:5:33: Mahatma Gandhi's name was invoked to
0:5:35: justify actions and aspirations
0:5:38: in the tribal regions of Andhra Pradesh
0:5:41: a guerrilla movement had spread in the
0:5:43: early 1920s
0:5:46: the colonial government had restricted
0:5:48: access to Forest resources affecting the
0:5:51: livelihoods and traditional rights of
0:5:53: the Hill People
0:5:54: they revolted against forced labor for
0:5:57: road building known as Baker
0:6:0: alluri sitaram Raju emerged as their
0:6:3: leader claiming special powers and
0:6:5: connections to Mahatma Gandhi
0:6:7: he encouraged wearing khadi and giving
0:6:10: up drinking but advocated the use of
0:6:13: force to achieve swaraj or self-rule
0:6:16: guerrilla warfare was waged against
0:6:18: British officials and police stations to
0:6:21: achieve independence
0:6:23: Raju was eventually captured and
0:6:25: executed in 1924 becoming a folk hero
0:6:30: so despite the different forms of
0:6:33: rebellion the struggles of the peasants
0:6:35: and tribals were United in their fight
0:6:37: against oppression and exploitation
0:6:40: lastly the non-cooperation movement in
0:6:44: India also included Plantation workers
0:6:46: in the Tea Gardens of Assam
0:6:49: so let us now take a look at swaraj in
0:6:52: the plantations
0:6:54: in the tea plantations of Assam the
0:6:56: workers understanding of Freedom was the
0:6:59: right to move freely and maintain a
0:7:1: connection with their villages
0:7:3: however the Inland emigration Act of
0:7:6: 1859 restricted their movement keeping
0:7:9: them confined to the Tea Gardens
0:7:12: during the non-cooperation movement
0:7:14: thousands of workers defied authorities
0:7:17: and left the plantations attempting to
0:7:20: return to their villages in the hope
0:7:21: that Gandhi Raj would give them land
0:7:24: however due to a railway and steamer
0:7:27: strike these workers never reached their
0:7:30: destinations and were caught and beaten
0:7:32: by the police
0:7:33: despite this setback the workers had
0:7:36: their own visions of swaraj which were
0:7:39: not defined by Congress programs
0:7:42: they imagined a time when suffering and
0:7:44: troubles would end and they would be
0:7:46: free from the oppressive conditions they
0:7:48: faced
0:7:49: the emotional connection of the workers
0:7:52: to the all India agitation was evident
0:7:54: in the way tribals chanted Gandhi's name
0:7:57: and demanded swatantra Bharat
0:8:0: they identified with the movement beyond
0:8:2: their immediate locality acting in
0:8:5: Gandhi's name or linking their actions
0:8:7: to the Congress
0:8:9: the movements of Plantation workers were
0:8:12: significant as they challenged the
0:8:14: restrictive laws that had been in place

0:8:17: their struggles would help to pave the
