A PN junction is formed by bringing together a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor. The P-type semiconductor has an excess of holes (positively charged carriers), while the N-type semiconductor has an excess of electrons (negatively charged carriers). When these two materials are joined, the electrons from the N-type region diffuse into the P-type region, creating a negatively charged layer near the junction called the depletion region.
