Sagar Parikrama

Why in News?
The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has recently announced the commencement of Phase-V of the Sagar Parikrama initiative.

About Sagar Parikrama


Objective

  • Sagar Parikrama aims to address the challenges faced by fishers and stakeholders in the coastal areas and improve their economic prospects.
  • It utilizes various fisheries schemes and programs, such as Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), to uplift the fishing community.

Significance

  • Sagar Parikrama is an evolutionary journey planned along the coastal belt to demonstrate solidarity with fisherfolk, fish farmers, and stakeholders.
  • The initiative is undertaken as part of the 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.

Nodal Ministry

  • Sagar Parikrama is coordinated by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying.

Participants

  • The Parikrama involves the participation of state fisheries officials, fishermen representatives, fish farmers, stakeholders, professionals, officials, and scientists from across the country.

Journey Phases

  • Phase V: The current phase of Sagar Parikrama covers six locations in Maharashtra and Goa. During this phase, fishermen, coastal fishers, fish farmers, and young fishery entrepreneurs receive certificates and sanctions related to PMMSY, KCC, and State Schemes.
  • Phase III: This phase primarily focuses on the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • Phase I and Phase II: The initial phases of Sagar Parikrama were conducted in March 2022 and September 2022, respectively.

Jal Jeevan Mission

Why in News?
Under Azadi ka Amrit Kaal, JJM celebrates a new milestone of ensuring safe and clean drinking water through taps to more than 12 Crore rural households of the country.

About Jal Jeevan Mission:


Nodal: Ministry of Jal Shakti
  • Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to ensure access of piped water for every household in India.
  • National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) was restructured and subsumed into Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – to provide Functional Household Tap Water (FHTC) to every rural household with service level at the rate of 55 lpcd i.e., Har Ghar Nal Se Jal (HGNSJ) by 2024.

Implications

  • Supply of water to all households is a basic necessity
  • Reduction in water borne diseases which was due to due to consumption of substandard water

Challenges

  • Critical situation of Decrease in ground water table.
  • Water demand and supply is a miss match
  • Contamination of local ground level sources of water like, ponds lakes and wells.
  • Sustaining the provision of water to all households is a challenge, not just starting it.
