About Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay:

  • Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a Bengali poet and writer who is best known for composing India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’.
    • The song was part of his novel Anandmath which was based on the Sanyasi Uprising.
  • He is regarded as a key figure in the literary renaissance of Bengal as well as the broader Indian subcontinent.

eCourts Project

Context:

All High Court websites now have captchas accessible to physically disabled people. The eCommittee Supreme Court has prepared the draft vision document for Phase III of the eCourts Project under the auspices of the Supreme Court of India.

Details:

  • This is a special initiative of the e-Committee, Supreme Court of India, to make the Indian judicial system more accessible to the disabled.
  • These captchas serve as entry points to access several essential facets of a court website, such as judgments/orders, cause-lists and checking the status of cases.
  • The visual captchas are also accompanied by text/audio captchas making the website content accessible to the visually challenged.
  • A judgement search portal has also been created by the e-Committee in collaboration with NIC.
    • The portal contains judgements and final orders passed by all High Courts.
    • The portal uses a free text search engine.
    • In addition, the portal provides the facility of using an audio captcha, along with a text captcha.
    • It also uses accessible combo boxes, making it easier for the visually disabled to navigate the website.

About eCourts Project:

  • E-Courts Project is a mission mode project undertaken by the Department of Justice, Government of India.
  • The eCourts Project was conceptualized on the basis of the “National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Indian Judiciary – 2005” submitted by eCommittee, Supreme Court of India with a vision to transform the Indian Judiciary by ICT enablement of Courts.
  • The project is a pan-India mission mode project funded and monitored by the Department of Justice for the District Courts across the country.
  • The project is aimed at providing designated services to litigants, lawyers and Judiciary through universal computerisation of district and subordinate courts, as well as the upgradation of ICT infrastructure of the Supreme Court and the High Courts.

Objectives of the Project:

  • To provide efficient & time-bound citizen-centric services delivery as detailed in eCourt Project Litigant’s Charter.
  • To develop, install & implement decision support systems in courts.
  • To automate the processes to provide transparency in accessibility of information to its stakeholders.
  • To enhance judicial productivity, both qualitatively & quantitatively, to make the justice delivery system affordable, accessible, cost-effective, predictable, reliable and transparent.
