Understanding Delhi Under
the Sultans
In the 12th century, Delhi thrived commercially under the Tomara Rajputs and Chauhan
dynasties, attracting a significant Jain merchant community. "Dehliwal" coins were in
widespread use. The early 13th century saw the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate by
Qutbuddin Aibak, marked by the rule of five dynasties and the development of cities like Dehli-
i Kuhna, Siri, Tughlaqabad, and Jahanpanah. Tawarikh, Persian chronicles by learned
individuals, advised rulers on just governance. However, these ideas faced societal resistance,
and many regions remained under local chieftains' control. Raziyya, a qualified female ruler,
faced opposition in 1236, revealing challenges posed by societal norms during her rule.
