In Class XI, you have learnt that the p-block elements
are placed in groups 13 to 18 of the periodic table.
Their valence shell electronic configuration is ns2np1–6
(except He which has 1s2 configuration). The properties
of p-block elements like that of others are greatly
influenced by atomic sizes, ionisation enthalpy, electron
gain enthalpy and electronegativity. The absence of dorbitals
in second period and presence of d or d and f
orbitals in heavier elements (starting from third period
onwards) have significant effects on the properties of
elements. In addition, the presence of all the three types
of elements; metals, metalloids and non-metals bring
diversification in chemistry of these elements.
Having learnt the chemistry of elements of Groups
13 and 14 of the p-block of periodic table in Class XI,
you will learn the chemistry of the elements of
subsequent groups in this Unit

FAQs on p-block Elements PPT Chemistry Class 12

1. What are p-block elements?
Ans. P-block elements are a group of elements in the periodic table that belong to groups 13 to 18. They are located on the right side of the periodic table, after the s-block and before the d-block elements. These elements have their outermost electron(s) in the p orbital.
2. What are the properties of p-block elements?
Ans. P-block elements have diverse properties due to the presence of different types of elements in this block. Some common properties include: - Varied reactivity: P-block elements can have different levels of reactivity, ranging from highly reactive metals (e.g., Group 13 elements) to noble gases (e.g., Group 18 elements). - Multiple oxidation states: Many p-block elements can exhibit different oxidation states, allowing them to form various compounds. - Electronegativity: Generally, p-block elements become more electronegative as you move across a period from left to right. - Nonmetals, metalloids, and metals: P-block elements include nonmetals (e.g., oxygen, sulfur), metalloids (e.g., boron, silicon), and metals (e.g., aluminum, tin).
3. Which elements belong to the p-block?
Ans. The p-block includes the following elements: - Group 13: Boron (B), Aluminum (Al), Gallium (Ga), Indium (In), Thallium (Tl) - Group 14: Carbon (C), Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), Tin (Sn), Lead (Pb) - Group 15: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), Bismuth (Bi) - Group 16: Oxygen (O), Sulfur (S), Selenium (Se), Tellurium (Te), Polonium (Po) - Group 17: Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br), Iodine (I), Astatine (At) - Group 18: Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon (Xe), Radon (Rn)
4. What are the applications of p-block elements?
Ans. P-block elements find various applications in different fields. Some notable examples include: - Boron: Boron compounds are used in the production of fiberglass, ceramics, and as a doping agent in semiconductors. - Carbon: Carbon, in the form of graphite or diamond, has numerous applications, such as in batteries, lubricants, and structural materials. - Nitrogen: Nitrogen is essential for the manufacturing of fertilizers, explosives, and as a refrigerant. - Oxygen: Oxygen is vital for respiration and is also used in oxyacetylene torches, water treatment, and medical applications. - Fluorine: Fluorine compounds are used in toothpaste, refrigerants, and as a catalyst in various chemical reactions.
5. How do p-block elements contribute to the environment?
Ans. P-block elements play a significant role in the environment. Here are a few examples: - Carbon: Carbon is the basis of organic chemistry and is involved in various environmental processes, such as carbon cycling in ecosystems. - Oxygen: Oxygen is crucial for sustaining life and is a vital component of the Earth's atmosphere. It supports respiration in organisms and contributes to the maintenance of ecosystems. - Nitrogen: Nitrogen is a critical nutrient for plants and is essential for their growth. It is also involved in the nitrogen cycle, which helps maintain the balance of nitrogen in the environment. - Chlorine: Chlorine compounds are used as disinfectants to treat drinking water, preventing the spread of waterborne diseases. - Xenon: Xenon is used in lighting applications, such as high-intensity discharge lamps, which are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional light bulbs.
