FAQs on Question Bank: Alcohols, Phenols & Ethers - Chemistry Class 12 - NEET

1. What are alcohols?
Ans. Alcohols are organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom. They can be classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary alcohols based on the number of carbon atoms bonded to the carbon atom attached to the hydroxyl group.
2. What is the difference between phenols and alcohols?
Ans. Phenols are organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to an aromatic ring, while alcohols contain a hydroxyl group attached to a carbon atom in an aliphatic chain. Phenols are more acidic than alcohols due to the resonance stabilization of the phenoxide ion formed upon deprotonation.
3. How are ethers formed?
Ans. Ethers are formed by the reaction of an alcohol with an alkyl halide or an alkoxide ion with an alkyl halide. This reaction is called Williamson ether synthesis. Ethers can also be formed by the dehydration of alcohols in the presence of an acid catalyst.
4. What are the uses of alcohols, phenols, and ethers?
Ans. Alcohols are used as solvents, as fuel, in the production of alcoholic beverages, and as intermediates in the synthesis of other organic compounds. Phenols are used in the production of resins, plastics, and detergents, as well as in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. Ethers are used as solvents, as fuel additives, and as anesthetic agents.
5. What are the physical properties of alcohols?
Ans. Alcohols have higher boiling points than alkanes and alkyl halides of similar molecular weight due to the presence of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups. They are also soluble in water due to their ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Primary and secondary alcohols can undergo oxidation to form aldehydes and ketones, respectively, while tertiary alcohols are resistant to oxidation.
