1. How do atoms form chemical bonds?
Ans. Atoms form chemical bonds by sharing or transferring electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration. This can occur through different types of bonds such as covalent bonds (where electrons are shared between atoms), ionic bonds (where electrons are transferred from one atom to another), or metallic bonds (where electrons are delocalized and shared among a group of atoms).
2. What is the difference between a polar and nonpolar covalent bond?

3. How does the VSEPR theory help in predicting molecular shapes?
Ans. The VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory states that electron pairs in the valence shell of an atom repel each other, and the molecular shape is determined by minimizing these repulsions. By knowing the number of electron pairs (bonding and non-bonding) around a central atom, one can use the VSEPR theory to predict the molecular shape. This theory helps in understanding the arrangement of atoms in molecules and ions.
4. What factors affect the strength of an ionic bond?
Ans. The strength of an ionic bond is influenced by two main factors: the charge of the ions and the distance between them. A higher charge on the ions leads to stronger electrostatic attraction between them, resulting in a stronger ionic bond. Additionally, a shorter distance between the ions also increases the strength of the bond as the electrostatic forces act over a smaller distance.
5. How is the bond length related to bond strength?
Ans. Bond length is inversely related to bond strength. As the bond length decreases, the bond strength increases. This is because a shorter bond length means that the bonded atoms are closer together, resulting in stronger attractive forces between their nuclei and the shared electrons. Therefore, a shorter bond length corresponds to a stronger bond.
