ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS 
 
Andaman and Nicobar islands ; one of the Union Territories of India , are a 
group of Islands at the juncture of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. 
The Bay of Bengal island groups consist of about 572 islands/islets ; scattered 
like green gems in Bay of Bengal. That is why they are also called “The 
Emerald Islands”.  
The territory is about 150 km (93 mi) north of Aceh in Indonesia and 
separated from Thailand and Myanmar by the Andaman Sea.

The territory is about 150 km (93 mi) north of Aceh in Indonesia and 
separated from Thailand and Myanmar by the Andaman Sea. 
 
 
Andaman and Nicobar Islands were formed due to collision between Indian 
Plate and Burma Minor Plate .  
Andaman and Nicobar Islands are southward extension of Arakan Yoma 
range (Myanmar) . 
The entire group of islands is divided into two broad categories : 
 The Andaman in the north and the Nicobar in the south.

They are separated by a water body which is called the Ten degree channel 
with Andaman to the north of the latitude and Nicobar to the south of 
Latitude. 
The Andaman sea lies to the east  and Bay of Bengal to the west of it. 
 
These are situated roughly between 6°N-14°N and 92°E -94°E.
