PRINCIPLES OF INHERITANCE AND
VARIATION
PRINCIPLES OF INHERITANCE AND
VARIATION
? Genetics: deals with the inheritance, as well as the variation
of characters from parents to offsprings.
? Inheritance: is the process by which characters are passed
on from parent to progeny .
? V ariation: is the degree by which progeny differ from their
parents.

MENDEL ’S LAWS OF INHERITANCE:
? Gregor Mendel. Conducted hybridization experiments on
garden peas for seven years (1856 – 1863) and proposed laws
of inheritance.
? Mendel conducted artificial pollination/cross pollination
experiments using several true-breeding pea lines.
? A true breeding line is one that, having undergone
continuous self-pollination for several generations.
? Mendel selected 14 true-breeding peas’ plant varieties,as
pair’ s which were similar except for one character with
contrasting traits.

FAQs on Principles of Inheritance & Variation PPT Biology Class 12

1. What are the principles of inheritance?
Ans. The principles of inheritance refer to the basic rules that govern the transmission of traits from parents to offspring. These principles include Mendel's laws of segregation and independent assortment, which explain how genetic information is passed on through generations.
2. How do variations occur during inheritance?
Ans. Variations occur during inheritance due to the different combinations of genes that are inherited from both parents. This variation is a result of genetic recombination and mutations, which can lead to new traits and characteristics in offspring.
3. Can environmental factors influence inheritance and variation?
Ans. While environmental factors can influence the expression of certain traits, they do not directly affect the inheritance of genetic information. Variations that occur due to environmental factors are not passed on to future generations through the genetic code.
4. What is the role of DNA in inheritance and variation?
Ans. DNA carries the genetic information that is inherited from parents to offspring. It contains the instructions for the development and functioning of an organism, including the traits that are passed down through generations. DNA mutations and recombination contribute to the variations observed during inheritance.
5. How do Mendel's laws explain inheritance and variation?
Ans. Mendel's laws of segregation and independent assortment describe how genetic information is inherited and how variations occur. The law of segregation states that each individual has two copies of each gene, and these copies separate during gamete formation. The law of independent assortment states that different genes segregate independently of one another, leading to the inheritance of various combinations of traits. These laws provide a framework for understanding inheritance and variation in organisms.
