Question (With solution): Law of conservation of momentum , NEET PDF Download

A bomb of mass 3.0 kg at rest, explodes in air into two pieces of masses 2.0 kg and 1.0 kg. The smaller mass goes at a speed of 80 m/s. The total energy imparted to the two fragments is (1) 1.07 kJ(2) 2.14 kJ (3) 2.4 kJ (4) 4.8 kJ?

From law of conservation of momentum, when no external force acts upon a system of two (or more) bodies, then the total momentum of the system remains constant.
Question (With solution): Law of conservation of momentum , NEET

m2=1kg,v2=80m/s

Momentum before explosion = momentum after explosion Since bomb v at rest, its velocity is zero, hence,

mv=m1v1+m2v2

3×0=2v1+1×80 ⇒ v1=−80/2=−40m/s
Total energy imparted is KE = 1/2 m1v21+1/2m2v22

= 1/2×2×(−40)= 1/2×1×(80)2

 =1600+3200=4800J

= 4.8 kJ Note Since velocity of second piece is negative, it indicateds that the piece is moving in opposite direction to the direction of the other piece.

FAQs on Question (With solution): Law of conservation of momentum , NEET

1. What is the law of conservation of momentum?
Ans. The law of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of a closed system remains constant if no external forces act on it. In other words, the momentum before an event is equal to the momentum after the event.
2. How is momentum defined in physics?
Ans. Momentum is a fundamental concept in physics that represents the quantity of motion possessed by an object. It is defined as the product of an object's mass and its velocity. The formula for momentum is: momentum = mass x velocity.
3. How does the law of conservation of momentum apply to collisions?
Ans. The law of conservation of momentum applies to all types of collisions, whether they are elastic or inelastic. In a collision, the total momentum of the system before the collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision, provided that no external forces act on the system.
4. Can momentum be transferred between objects of different masses?
Ans. Yes, momentum can be transferred between objects of different masses. According to the law of conservation of momentum, if one object gains momentum, another object must lose an equal amount of momentum. This transfer of momentum can occur even if the masses of the objects are different.
5. How is the law of conservation of momentum applied in real-life situations?
Ans. The law of conservation of momentum has various applications in real-life situations. For example, it helps explain the recoil experienced by a person firing a gun, the movement of rockets in space, and the behavior of objects in collisions such as car accidents. By understanding and applying this law, scientists and engineers can analyze and predict the motion of objects in a wide range of scenarios.
