  • A train stops when the chain pulled because of the following mechanism. 
  • When the chain is pulled, one small valve gets opened and air enters to the underside of the piston head of the brake cylinder through pipe connections. 
  • Initially there is vacuum on both top and bottom side of the piston head. 
  • When air enters the underside of the piston head, the piston raises up due to difference of pressure and pulls the brake thus stopping the train.

1. What is the scientific explanation for why the sky appears blue during the day?
Ans. The sky appears blue during the day due to a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight passes through the Earth's atmosphere, the shorter blue wavelengths of light are scattered more than the longer red wavelengths. This scattering of blue light in all directions gives the sky its blue color.
2. Why do leaves change color in the fall?
Ans. Leaves change color in the fall due to a process called leaf senescence. As the days become shorter and temperatures drop, trees produce less chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color in leaves. As chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments such as carotenoids and anthocyanins become more visible, giving the leaves their vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues.
3. How does a rainbow form?
Ans. A rainbow forms when sunlight is refracted, or bent, as it passes through raindrops in the air. The sunlight is then reflected off the inside surface of the raindrop and refracted again as it exits the drop, creating a spectrum of colors. This process is known as dispersion. The result is a circular arc of colors that we perceive as a rainbow.
4. What causes the tides in the ocean?
Ans. The tides in the ocean are primarily caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. The Moon's gravitational force pulls on the Earth, causing a bulge of water on the side facing the Moon and a corresponding bulge on the opposite side. As the Earth rotates, different parts of the ocean experience these bulges, resulting in the rise and fall of the tides.
5. Why does lightning occur during thunderstorms?
Ans. Lightning occurs during thunderstorms due to the buildup of electric charges in the atmosphere. Thunderstorms create an environment where positive and negative charges separate within clouds. As the charges separate, a strong electric field is created, leading to the rapid movement of electrons. When the electric field becomes strong enough, it ionizes the air, allowing a flow of current between the positive and negative charges. This flow of current is what we see as lightning.
