2. Why does ice melt into water but water can also turn into steam?
Ans. Ice, water, and steam are the same substance (H₂O) in different states of matter. Heating provides energy that increases particle movement, causing transitions between states. When ice absorbs heat energy, particles vibrate faster and overcome forces holding them in fixed positions, melting into liquid water. Further heating causes water molecules to gain enough energy to escape into the gaseous state, forming steam through evaporation.
3. How can we tell the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter?
Ans. Physical changes alter the appearance or state of matter without creating new substances-examples include melting, freezing, evaporation, and dissolution. Chemical changes produce entirely new materials with different properties, like burning, rusting, or digestion.
