  • Fungus is a type of plant that cannot produce its food. It appears as a black, white, or green velvety layer on decaying foodstuffs, leather, and other materials.
  • These Fungus grows on bread mould when it starts decomposing.

How to Preserve Foods

  • Food preservation is the process of preventing edible items such as fruits and vegetables from spoiling. 
  • The foods' nutritional value, flavor, and color are all preserved. This is done to extend the life of the food product and make storage and distribution easier.
  • There are five methods of preserving foods they are as follows:
    (a) Drying: Some foods, like dried fruits, are dried to keep them fresh for longer.
    (b) Refrigeration or freezing: Foods like frozen peas are kept cold to maintain their flavour and nutrients.
    (c) Pickling: This method preserves food in a vinegar or brine solution, commonly used for items like cucumbers and onions.
    (d) Fermentation: Microorganisms convert sugars into acids or alcohol, which helps preserve foods such as yogurt and sauerkraut.
    (e) Sweetening and salting: Sugar kills germs and adds flavour, as seen in jelly and jams. Salting fish and other foods helps dehydrate them.

  • Mamidi Tandra: Aam Papad is a dried delicacy made from ripe mangoes.
  • First, gather the following items from the market: a palm-leaf mat, coconut-husk string, sugar, jaggery, and casuarina poles.
  • Next, create a platform using the mat and casuarina poles.
  • Then, strain the mango juice from the ripe mangoes through a fine cloth to remove any fibres.
  • After that, spread a thin layer of juice on the mat, ensuring it is even, and let it dry.
  • Cover it with a sari to keep it clean from dust.
  • For four weeks, it was hoped that it would not rain. Layer by layer was added until the jelly became four centimetres thick and resembled a golden cake.
  • After four weeks, the thick layer of golden Mamidi Tandra cake is ready.
