Negative Marking in GATE 2024

Negative marking can have an impact on the candidate's results, so it's important for them to pay attention while taking the exam. Before preparing for the exam, candidates should familiarize themselves with the GATE negative marking scheme.

  • There is no negative marking for questions under MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) and NAT (Numerical Answer Type)
  • There is negative marking for MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions). Any incorrect answer to MCQ will result in a deduction of marks.

GATE Exam Pattern: Key Details and Information of 2025 Exam Pattern | How to Prepare for GATE Electrical Engineering (EE)

Types of Questions in GATE 2024

GATE may contain questions of THREE different types in all the papers:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carry 1 or 2 marks each, in all the papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which ONLY ONE choice is correct.
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all the papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which ONE or MORE than ONE choice(s) is / are correct.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

  •  carry 1 or 2 marks each in most of the papers and sections. For these questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered by the candidate using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor (keyboard of the computer will be disabled).
  • No choices will be shown for these types of questions.
  • The answer can be a number such as10 or-10 (an integer only).
  • The answer may be in decimals as well,
  • For example,
  • 10.1 (one decimal) or 10.01 (two decimals) or -10.001 (three decimals).
  • These questions will be mentioned with, up to which decimal places, the candidates need to present the answer.
  •  Also, for some NAT type problems an appropriate range will be considered while evaluating these questions so that the candidate is not unduly penalised due to the usual round-off errors.
  • Candidates are advised to do the rounding off at the end of the calculation (not in between steps). Wherever required and possible, it is better to give NAT answers up to a maximum of three decimal places.

This virtual calculator is embedded in the software of the computer-based test and can be used to perform basic calculations during the exam.

Does GATE pattern change every year?

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam pattern can change from year to year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) jointly conduct the GATE exam every year and they have the authority to make changes to the exam pattern as they see fit.

Some examples of changes that have been made to the GATE exam pattern in the past include changes to the number of questions, the distribution of marks, the types of questions that are asked, and the duration of the exam.

However, it's worth noting that the changes in the pattern are usually minor and the overall structure of the exam remains similar from year to year. The core objective of the exam remains the same i.e. to test the understanding of the candidate in the specific engineering/science subject.

How many questions are in total asked in GATE exam?

The number of questions asked in the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam varies depending on the paper you are taking. It can range between 65 to 85 questions.

The number of questions, as well as the weightage of marks, can change from year to year based on the decision of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who conduct the GATE exam.

May I carry a copy for rough work in GATE Exam?

During the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) examination, candidates are not allowed to bring any physical materials, including copies for rough work. This is to prevent candidates from cheating or bringing in unauthorized materials.

Candidates are provided with a rough sheet of paper by the invigilator for rough work during the exam, which will be collected back before the end of the exam.
