JEE Main is considered one of the most challenging entrance exams in India and passing it is necessary to gain admission to top central government engineering institutes. To design an effective study strategy, students must have a good understanding of JEE Main scores vs percentile. However, many students have doubts about JEE Main marks vs percentile. The National Testing Agency (NTA) publishes JEE Main results in percentile scores, which are normalized grades, not the actual marks of candidates. Normalization is done to ensure parity in the difficulty level of the question paper, as the exam is held in several shifts and days.
JEE Main score not only determines the JEE qualifying cut-off for JEE Advanced but also plays a vital role in JEE main ranks. Although admissions are based on JEE counselling, candidates can calculate their rank if they know their JEE Main score, which will help them determine the colleges they want to join. With an all-time high attendance of 95.8%, both sessions of the exam have been conducted, and the NTA analyzes JEE Main marks vs percentile to compile the rank list. Candidates can check the formula for JEE Main Marks vs Percentile and see the comparative analysis of marks vs rank JEE Mains to plan their future course of action.
The JEE Main Exam is conducted over several days with morning and evening shifts, potentially leading to differences in the difficulty level. To address this, normalization is used to calculate a percentile score for each of the three subjects - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
A student's JEE Main percentile score is determined by converting their marks into a scale of 100 to 0, with 100 representing the highest score in a particular subject.
The JEE Main rank list is published by the NTA in the form of percentile scores instead of raw scores obtained by candidates. To ensure fair evaluation despite differences in exam difficulty level, the normalization process is used to create the ranking list. This involves calculating the percentile score for each of the four sessions, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and overall score.
Make the most of their JEE exam results, candidates must understand how to interpret their scores, percentile, and rank. This knowledge is crucial not only to assess their performance but also to determine which colleges they are eligible to apply for. A table has been provided based on trends from previous years, which displays projected percentile and rank based on 10,00,000 (10 lakh) candidates. However, it's important to note that these projections are not definitive or exact as several factors determine an individual's rank. Therefore, the table should only be used as a guide to track their progress as they prepare for JEE-Main (April 2023). Additionally, students must understand how rank is assigned based on percentile to gain a thorough understanding of the relationship between JEE Main marks and percentiles.
Category | Range |
Marks | 0-300 |
Percentile | 0-100 |
Rank | 1-Total number of candidates |
The table below illustrates the relationship between expected marks, percentile, and rank based on past trends. It should be noted that this relationship is subject to change due to various factors such as the number of candidates.
The range in ranks widens as the percentile is considered up to the third decimal place. During the exam, NTA calculates the percentile or the NTA score up to seven decimal places. In case of ties, individual subject scores will also be taken into consideration while ranking the candidates.

In case of a tie between two or more candidates with the same percentile score, the inter-se merit will be determined based on the following rules:
The JEE Main 2023 result will be declared separately for each session (June & July 2022), and the best score of the two sessions will be considered for candidates who appeared in both sessions. The final scores will be used to prepare the merit list, and ranks will be determined accordingly.

Scoring 70 percentile in JEE Mains means that you performed better than 70% of the students who appeared for the exam. However, with this percentile, your rank would be around 3 lakh, which may require compromising on your preferred college or course. Therefore, it is advisable to focus on improving your score for better opportunities.
For General category candidates, a minimum percentile of 95+ is required for admission to NITs. Reserved category candidates, on the other hand, need to score 80+ percentile to secure a seat in NITs.
No, percentage and Percentile are not the same in JEE Main. Percentage represents the total marks obtained by a candidate, while Percentile shows how well the candidate performed compared to other students who appeared for the exam.
For B. Tech courses, Paper 1 is conducted, while Paper 2 is for B. Plan and B. Arch students. The B.E/B. Tech exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions worth 300 marks. For B.Arch, Paper 2A has 82 questions for 400 marks, and for B. Plan, there are 105 multiple-choice questions worth 400 marks.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) uses a normalization method to calculate percentile scores for JEE Main. They convert the raw scores into a scale range and estimate the individual percentile score using a formula. The normalization process is required as the JEE Main exam is conducted in different sessions.
